Date: Sun, 11 May 1997 19:50:15 EDT Here is Cory Bruner's latest FAQ: The Dragon Warrior 1 FAQ for NES! Feel free to make as many copies of this FAQ as you want, as long as you don't alter it in any way!!! Thanks to Nintendo, for making the Strategy Guide which helped me a lot in making this FAQ, and to Galoob, for making the GG codes for this game. Contents of this FAQ: 1. Introduction 2. Story 3. Experience Levels 4. Control 5. Walkthrough 6. Enemies 7. Weapons 8. Armor 9. Items 10. Maps 11. GG Codes!!! 12. Spells 13. Miscellaneous 14. Read this!!!! 1. Introduction- When I first played this game about 3 years ago, I thought it was a cool game. It took me almost 6 months to finish, and I had lots of fun. I had to sell it last year, though. But, now, 3 years after I finished it, I just had to write an FAQ on it! So, here it is! This is a fun game, but it takes a VERY long time to finish. 2. Story- Thousands of years ago, a warrior named Erdrick used a Ball of Light to rid the land of Alefgard of monsters. He defeated the Dragon Lord and rid the world of these monsters. After hundreds of years, the Dragon Lord's castle reappeared On the Isle of Dragons and monsters returned to Alefgard. Worst of all, Gwaelin, the daughter of King Lorik, vanished one night and has not been seen since. When things seemed hopeless, a stranger came to the king. He claimed to be a descendant of Erdrick, and the King allowed the stranger to fight the evil, and maybe restore peace to Alefgard. You play as that stranger, a descendant of the great Erdrick. 3. Get the three chests. They contain a Torch, 120 Gold Pieces, and a Magic Key. Use the Key to unlock the door, go down the stairs, then head out of Tantegel Castle to the town of Brecconary, which isn't too far away. Buy a Club and some Clothes at the Weapon Shop. Talk to the people around town and get some info. Then go to the Item Shop and buy a Dragon's Scale. Use the Dragon's Scale and you'll get a small Defense Boost. If you use a key to enter the big house, you can buy Fairy Water. Fight some enemies around town to get up to level 3. If you run low on HP, return to Brecconary and stay at the Inn to recover your HP and MP. If you get into the red zone, get to Brecconary ASAP! If you die, you lose all the levels you went up, all the Spells you got on the way and you only start with half your gold, so avoid dying at all cost! When you reach level 3, go back to the King and save your game. Buy some Leather Armor and Herbs in Brecconary as soon as you can, then head north. You gain the useful Heal spell at level 3. Go into the cave, and use the Torch to see what you are doing. Find Erdrick's Tablet in the Treasure Box to learn about the three mystical items. You will learn more about them later. Now leave the cave and head west to Garinham. Talk to the townspeople to learn more about the disappearance of Princess Gwaelin. Fight some enemies outside to get Experience and money. At level 4, you get the useful Hurt spell. If you run into any Magicians, use that on them. Before level 4, watch out for them!!! Get about 90 Gold Pieces before heading back to the castle. Buy a Small Shield in Brecconary for 90 Gold Pieces, then head back to the castle. Talk to the people around here to get some info. Talk to the king and save your game. Now go back north, and go to the east. Be careful on the other side of the bridge-there are more dangerous enemies here. Before crossing the next bridge, get to level 5 or 6. Look for a gap in the rocks and go through it. Go down the stairs that you find there and talk to the wizard guy. He'll tell you about the Silver Harp. This item is dangerous to get, but you must in order to finish the game. Don't worry about it right now and head back out. Go to the town in the middle of the big forest. It is the town of Kol. Buy a Copper Sword, if you can afford it. If you can't hunt enemies outside to get 180 Gold Pieces. Talk to the people to get some info. Search 5 steps south of the pool of water to get the Flute. What is it used for, you say? You'll see soon!!! Fight enemies around here until you get up to level 10 or 11, then go into the cave south of Kol (remember to Save after going up each Level!!) . Pick up a Hand Axe and some Chain Mail (and maybe an Iron Shield) in Garinham before going into the south cave. Use Radiant Magic to see what you are doing. Get down to the bottom and go up the stairs to get to the South Lands. There are dangerous enemies here, so be prepared. Use Sleep to put enemies to sleep-they'll be a lot easier then. Use the StopSpell Spell on the Warlocks. Get to the town south of the cave called Rimuldar. Talk to the people here to get some info, then buy a Broad Sword and Full Plate Armor in Kol when you have enough money. On the edge of the town (you'll have to go outside the wall, but not completely out of the town) you'll find a store that sells Magic Keys. Buy a few, then head back to the castle to save. You can use a Magic Key to open the door with the 4 chests inside. They all have gold in them. Open the door above that room to get to a new area. You can buy Magic Keys here too, but they cost a little more. Go to the right of that town, but don't go more than 2 steps from the outside wall or you'll go out of the castle. Go down from the wall until you reach some stairs. Go down the stairs and get the Stones of Sunlight-one of the three mystical items mentioned on the Tablet. If you are at about Level 12 and have a Magic Key, Save your game and go back to Garinham. If not, do what you need to to get these items. If you didn't get the Big Shield here yet, do so now. Unlock the door and go into the room. Talk to the people to get some info, then go up to the North Wall. Press up at every step until you find a secret passage. Go in and go down the stairs to begin searching for the Harp. There is a Cursed Belt down here-don't pick it up. If you do, DON'T use it. You can sell it at a shop later. If you did use it, return to the curse-remover in Brecconary and he'll get it off for you. When you get the Harp, use the Outside Spell (which you get at level 12) to go outside. Stay at the Inn, then go to the King and Save your game. Now return to the guy that told you about the Harp earlier. He'll step aside and let you get the Staff of Rain-the second item on the Tablet! Return to the King and save. Now travel to the bridge south of Garinham and cross it. Go down and into the Mountain Cave. There is some pretty cool Treasure in here (DON'T get the Death Necklace!) Now head out. If you found the Fighter's Ring, use it ASAP, as it boosts your Attack Power a little. Fight some enemies down here to get up to about Level 15. If you're not getting Experience fast enough, fight some enemies south of the cave. Use Return or the Wings (you did find them in Rimuldar, didn't you?) to return to the Castle when you need to. When you are at about level 15, cross the next bridge and go to Hauksness. The town has been wiped out by monsters. One of the trees is guarded by an Axe Knight. Use StopSpell on him in the first round, then just hit him with regular attacks and use Heal and Herbs when you need them. Beat him and search the tree he was guarding. Now you have Erdrick's Armor, the best Armor in the game!! It protects you from Poison Swamps and Barriers, and best of all, you get 1 Hit Point back with every step!!! Get back to the castle and Save right away. Now cross the next bridge (the one closer to the town). When you're over there, look for yet another bridge. Cross it and you'll find a town called Cantlin. But before you can enter, Golem jumps out and attacks. Use the Flute (you wondered what it was for, didn't you) in the first round. This puts him to sleep. Now just use the Hurt Spell and regular attacks. If he wakes up, use the Flute again. When you beat him, you can now enter Cantlin. Make sure you have plenty of Magic Keys. Here you can buy the best Shield in the game for 14800 Gold Pieces (WOW!!!) and the second-best shield in the game for 9800 Gold. You can also buy the second-best armor, but you won't need it now that you have Erdrick's Armor. If you mess up and sell Erdrick's Armor, return to the tree and get it again. Now that you have some of the best armor and weapons, it's time to free Gwaelin. Return to the castle and Save. Go back into the Swamp Cave and go to the locked door. Unlock it and you will have to face a Green Dragon. Use Hurt Magic and hit him with your sword. Use Heal when needed. Beat him and talk to Gwaelin. Take her back to the King. Gwaelin will give you the Gwaelin's Love. Save your game, then heal at the Inn and head back to the area where Hauksness is. Now take the lower bridge and go into the swamp area. When you use the Gwaelin's love, it acts like a compass, telling you how far away you are from the castle. At 70 South and 40 East, Search the ground and get the Erdrick's Token. Go back once again to the king to save your game. Now go to the island south of Rimuldar. Go down the stairs and show the guy the Token. He will vanish, leaving the box there. Get the Rainbow Drop from the box- the final item on the Tablet!!!! You can fight some enemies on this island for Experience and Money. Goldman doesn't give too much Experience, but he drops lots of Gold, almost 200 pieces sometimes!! Go to the corner of the island where the isle of Charlock is just 1 step away from the Southlands. Use the Rainbow Drop, and the powers of all 3 mystical items will form a bridge!!! Now you can enter Charlock and battle the Dragon Lord!!!! But don't go in just yet. Get to about level 22 before going in. Fight some foes on the island to get some Experience. Save at the Castle before going into Charlock, as it is very dangerous in here. In the area where the Throne is, check behind it and a stairway will open. Now you can head further into the castle. Make your way through the castle (see Maps). Be sure to pick up Erdrick's Sword in here. At the end of the dungeon, you'll come to a room with 6 treasure boxes and the Dragon Lord. Don't waste your time with the boxes- you're going to finish the game in a minute anyway. The Dragon Lord will ask you if you want to join him. Say no and the fight will begin. Just use a few regular attacks and he's dead. That's it??? You waited the entire game to fight this loser??? But wait, there's more!!! The Dragon Lord will reveal it's true form. None of your magic will work on this guy, so just whack him with regular attacks. Use Healmore when you need to. Keep in mind that this is not an easy fight. Beat him, then you get the Ball of Light and no more enemies will attack you. Head back to the castle and talk to the King. Answer yes to Gwaelin. Watch the quick ending. You win the game!!! 6.
